Off-track garage door repair

Off-track garage door repair in Manchester, NH

The door is hanging at an angle with a roller sitting outside the rail, and it will not go up or down. A bumper tapped it, a roller split, or a snowbank pushed the track. Leave it exactly where it is and call. A crooked door can fall.

How you know it is off the track

What an off-track door looks like

  • A roller outside the rail

Look at the side of the door. If a wheel is sitting beside the track instead of in it, the door is off.

  • The door is wedged at an angle

One side moved and the other did not. The panels are twisted against each other and the hinges are under strain.

  • A bent or spread section of track

The rail flared open where the roller came out. It will not hold a roller until it is straightened or replaced.

  • It happened right after a bump

A car backing out, a snowblower, a plow bank shoved against the bottom section. The door was fine, and then it was not.

  • A loud scrape and then it stopped

A roller with a worn bearing seized in the track and the door tried to climb over it.

What we do

Back in the track, then fix why it came out

We take the load off the door, walk the rollers back into the rail one section at a time, and check every panel and hinge for damage from the twist. Rollers that split or seized get replaced, usually the whole set, because the others are the same age. Bent track gets straightened if it is minor and replaced if it is not.

Then we find what caused it. A cable that went slack, a spring out of balance, a loose track bracket on an old wood jamb, or a slab that heaved. Putting the door back without fixing that means it comes out again in a month.

Plow banks and frost

Why doors come off the track here

The plow pushes a bank against the bottom of the door, someone hits the button, and the bottom section bows while the rollers try to lift. On the narrow driveways in Rimmon Heights and Notre Dame there is nowhere else for the snow to go. Then in March the frost heave lifts one side of the apron and the door drags on that side until a roller pops out.

Older detached garages have track bolted to wood jambs that have moved over a hundred winters. We re-anchor the track to something solid so it stays put.

Questions we get on the phone

Off-track garage door questions

  • How much does it cost?

It depends on the door and the part. The tech confirms the price in your driveway before any work starts, and you can say no. There is never a service charge for the visit.

  • Can I push it back in myself?

No. The springs are still loaded and a twisted door can fall or spring the wrong way. Leave it and call.

  • Is the door ruined?

Usually not. Most off-track doors go back in with new rollers and a straightened rail. If a panel cracked or a hinge tore out of the section, we will show you and talk through it.

  • A car hit the door. Repair or replace?

It depends on how many sections are bent. One bowed bottom section is often repairable. A door pushed in across two or three sections usually is not, and we will say so.

  • How long does it take?

An hour or two in the driveway for most. Longer if track has to be replaced.
