What the door is telling you
Match the symptom, then call
-
A loud bang and a door that will not lift
A torsion spring broke. Do not run the opener. Springs go on cold mornings here more than any other time.
-
The door hangs crooked
A cable let go or jumped the drum. Leave the door where it is.
-
A roller is outside the track
The door is off the rail, usually after a bump or a plow bank. It can fall. Do not push on it.
-
The motor runs and nothing moves
A stripped opener gear, often from pulling against a door frozen to the slab.
-
The door goes down and comes back up
Photo eyes blocked, dirty, or out of line, or the force set too low for a door that is heavier in the cold.
-
The door is frozen to the floor
Meltwater froze the seal to the slab. Forcing it strips the opener or folds the bottom panel. Turn the opener off and call.
-
Rust through the bottom section
Road salt got it. Once the steel is perforated, the section will not hold a seal or a bracket, and it is time to talk about a new door.
Winter
Three things worth knowing before the first cold snap
-
Springs break in the cold
A spring near the end of its cycle life lets go on the first morning in the low teens. If yours came with a house from the 1990s or earlier, expect it.
-
Ice at the seal is the start of most winter calls
A good bottom seal and a door that closes level keep meltwater from freezing the door down. If the door has been freezing to the slab, that is a fix, not a fact of life.
-
Battery backup is the difference in an ice storm
An opener with battery backup lifts the door through an outage. For a garage with no other way in, that matters.
