Garage door spring repair
Garage door spring repair and replacement in Manchester, NH
A crack like a gunshot from the garage, and now the door will not go up. That is a torsion spring, and it is the call we get most on cold mornings. Do not run the opener again. Call, and a tech leaves with springs sized for your door.

How you know it is the spring
What a broken spring looks and sounds like
-
A loud bang, then nothing
The spring letting go under tension. People hear it from the kitchen and go looking for what fell.
-
The door lifts a few inches and quits
The opener is trying to pick up dead weight. Shut it off before it strips the gear.
-
A gap in the coil above the door
Torsion springs sit on a shaft above the opening. A broken one shows a clean break with a gap in the coil.
-
Cables hanging slack or the door sitting crooked
When the spring goes, the cables lose tension and can jump the drum. Leave them alone.
-
The door is dead weight by hand
A balanced door lifts with one hand. A door with a broken spring is the full weight of the door, often well over 150 pounds.
What we do
Two springs, sized to the door, balanced and tested
Both springs on a door have the same cycles on them. When one breaks the other is right behind it, so we replace both on every spring job. The new springs are sized to the door's actual weight, wound to the right tension, and the door is balanced so it stays put at half height. The opener force gets reset so it is lifting a balanced door, not fighting one.
Cables, drums, rollers, and bottom brackets get looked over on the same visit, because salt eats the bottom hardware here and a spring job is the right time to catch it. Single-spring doors get a single replacement. Extension-spring doors, common on older single-car garages on the West Side, get both springs and safety cables.
New Hampshire cold
Why springs break on the first cold morning
A torsion spring is rated for a set number of cycles, and cold finishes off the ones that are close. Steel contracts on a morning in the low teens, the tired spring loses the little give it had left, and it snaps on the first lift of the day. That is why the phone rings early in December and again after every cold snap through February.
If the springs came with a house built in the 1990s or before, they are on borrowed time in any season. The doors in the Bedford and Londonderry subdivisions from that era are going through their springs now, and so are the post-war ranches on the east side of Manchester.
Questions we get on the phone
Garage door spring questions
-
How much does it cost?
It depends on the door and the part. The tech confirms the price in your driveway before any work starts, and you can say no. There is never a service charge for the visit.
-
One spring or both?
Both. They wear at the same rate. Replace one and you are calling again for the other within months, and paying for a second visit.
-
How long do springs last?
They are rated in cycles, most around 10,000, which is seven to twelve years for a family using the door every day. High-cycle springs are available if the door gets heavy use.
-
Can I use the door until you get here?
No. The opener will strip its gear lifting dead weight, and lifting by hand can drop the door on you. Leave it down and call.
-
How long does it take?
Usually under an hour once the tech is in the driveway. Springs for most Manchester doors are on the truck.
